Background

Lupus SA NPO 173/306 was my brainchild that came to life in 2015. On the 3rd of June 2015 I was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with Lupus. I was and still am very sick, but relieved when my illness finally got a name. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined how my life would change since that fateful day in June.

For the next 12 months I was in and out of hospital and in and out of doctor’s surgeries. I felt like a freak of nature because the one specialist will bring other to examine me, look at me and poke me. They would poke here, pinch there and then this x-ray and then that blood work. I went from being no one to a well-known figure, knowing the security guard and nurses by name and vice versa.

When it dawned on me that they don’t know what to do with me and the severity of Lupus, I decided to do something. I was too young to roll over and die. My kids weren’t going to be raised in a hospital and by grandparents, aunties and uncles.

Then Lupus South Africa was born as I needed a name to fight. I needed a tool to create awareness and a vehicle to expose this horrible disease, not only for myself but for those unable to do so. Lupus South Africa raises awareness about the disease in communities, we print our own pamphlets and distribute them wherever we can, we act to the needs of our locals be it the drought that created water shortages, clothing or bedding drives, etc. Lupus South Africa are working tirelessly to educate people and to provide informative medical information and articles to improve day to day living and decision making whilst fighting for a cure for Lupus. Lupus might win this battle but we WILL Win the War!
